The Geophysical Laboratory's Postdoctoral Fellow Shi Liu was awarded the 2017 APS Metropolis Award in late October.  The purpose of the award is to recognize doctoral thesis research of outstanding quality and achievement in computational physics and to encourage effective written and oral presentation of research results.

Washington, DC— New work from a team led by the Geophysical Laboratory's Alexander Goncharov has created a new extremely incompressible carbon nitride compound. They say it could be the prototype for a whole new family of superhard materials, due to the unexpected ratio of carbon and nitrogen atoms. Their work is published in the journal Chemistry of Materials.

Li Zhu joins the Geophysical Laboratory as a postdoctoral associate from the University of Basel. Li is working with Timothy Strobel on the development of a reaction pathway prediction method to be able to apply the method and predict reaction pathways and transition states.

Liuxiang Yang is a postdoctoral associate from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He works with Reinhard Boehler and others at ORNL on the melting of transition metals and noble gases.

Matthew Ward joins the Geophysical Laboratory as a postdoctoral associate working with Tim Strobel on the synthesis of high pressure carbon materials. Matthew is also interested in solid-state synthesis and x-ray crystallography.

Qianqian Wang is a postdoctoral associate from Yanshan University working with Tim Strobel. She is working on diamond anvil cells and large-volume synthesis experiments, as well as density functional theory calculations for creating novel carbon-based materials with superlative properties.
