Michael Walter is the Director of the Geophysical Laboratory. Walter’s research focuses on the differentiation of the mantle and core, mantle melting and element partitioning, subsolidus phase relations and crystal chemistry, and the origin of deep mantle diamonds and their inclusions. Current projects include investigating hydrous and carbonated partial melting in the transition zone and lower mantle with an aim to understand deep mantle metasomtism and reactive transport processes, investigating diamonds and their mineral inclusions as geodynamic tracers, and studying the recycling of volatile elements in the deep earth and their role in earth evolution.
