Sendai, Japan—The Geophysical Laboratory's webmaster and departmental assistant, Michelle Scholtes, was invited to the Advanced Institute for Materials Research at Tohoko University in Sendai, Japan for a foreign exchange of information regarding administrative support in a scientific research institution.  The visit included the exchange of opinions and experiences regarding research support systems at each institute.

Michelle worked with each administrative support department to learn about and discuss the similarities and differences between the institutes.  The departments included international exchange, general affairs, accounting, property management, management office for safety and health, and public relations.  Her hosts, Dr. Susumu Ikeda, Hiroshi Oikawa, Tomoko Tagawa, Sayaka Unoura and Aso Ayako, provided wonderful hospitality and an extremely productive itinerary for Michelle to not only learn about the institute, but Japanese culture as well. At the end of the trip, Michelle gave a talk at the institute about what she had learned and gave tips for processes that she is an expert in at the Geophysical Laboratory.

"AIMR is a state-of-the-art research institution.  I am excited to incorporate what I have learned there to enhance our support departments at the Geophysical Laboratory," said Michelle. "It is important to not only focus on the science at these institutions, but also the support that the scientists receive.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to visit AIMR."
