Sunday, December 13
The annual Carnegie reception at AGU was a wonderful evening of reminiscing and catching up! Current employees and alumni from the Geophysical Laboratory, Department of Terrestrial Magnetism and Global Ecology gathered together to check out posters highlighting accomplishments from 2015, and to discuss the week of exciting science ahead. The reception brought together old friends and colleagues and continues to spark collaboration between all Carnegie staff -- past and present.
Monday, December 14
Research scientist, Sergey Lobanov, presented, "Probing iron spin state by optical absorption in laser-heated diamond anvil cell" during the Advanced Experimental and Analytical Techniques for Mineralogy and Mineral Physics session on Monday morning.
Postdoctoral associate, Daniel Hummer, gave an engaging talk about the "Structure and Viscosity of Carbonate-Silicate Melts Using in situ Techniques" during the Earth's Geodynamic Carbon Cycle: Subduction, Storage, Migration, and Outgassing session. Fang Huang presents his research on "Immiscible Hydrocarbon and Aqueous Fluids Under Subduction Zone Conditions and Implications for the Deep Carbon Cycle" at the Earth's Geodynamic Carbon Cycle: Subduction, Storage, Migration, and Outgassing session to conclude GL's first day at AGU!
Postdoctoral associate, Megan Duncan, discussed her poster "Experimental Constraints on CO2 Solubility in Terrestrial Magma Oceans" to conference attendees during the Accretion, Differentiation, and Early Planetary Evolution I poster session on Monday morning.
Corliss Kin I Sio, a Carnegie Fellow, presented her poster, "An improved geospeedometry using chemical-isotopic profiles in olivines" during the Advances in Geothermobarometry and Geospeedometry session on Monday afternoon. Check out a clip of her work below.
Carnegie fellow, Zack Geballe, was very excited to engage the AGU attendees with his poster about "High-pressure thermal properties of liquid, solid and amorphous H2O" during the Advanced Experimental and Analytical Techniques for Mineralogy and Mineral Physics session Monday evening. Alex Goncharov, staff scientist, displayed his poster on the "Elasticity of Hydrogen at High Pressures" during the Matter in Planetary Interiors: Insights from High-Pressure Experiments, Computational Advances, and Extreme Petrology to a captivated audience. Staff Scientist, Ronald Cohen, kicks off day two with two talks: "Electrical conductivity in the mantle and core and implications for the geodynamo" during the The Geomagnetic Field on Long Timescales: Characterization and Linkages with Evolution of the Core and Mantle morning session; and "Equations of state and phase transitions in (Mg,Fe)SiO3 perovskite and post-perovskites, position of the phase boundary and its double crossing, by Quantum Monte Carlo" during the Matter in Planetary Interiors: Insights from High-Pressure Experiments, Computational Advances, and Extreme Petrology session.
Anat Shahar, staff scientist, presents "Stable Isotope Evidence for Planetary Differentiation" during the Chemical and Dynamical Constraints on the Formation and Evolution of the Terrestrial Planets session on Tuesday afternoon.
Wednesday, December 16
Staff Scientist, Andrew Steele, presented his talk "The provenance and formation of reduced carbon phases on Mars from the study of Martian meteorites" during the Carbon on Mars morning session to kick-off day three of GL at AGU15.
Yingwei Fei, staff scientist, presented "Experimental constraints on the sulfur content in the Earth's core" during the Physics and Chemistry of Earth's Deep Mantle and Core session this afternoon, and it was awesome!
Postdoctoral associates Neil Bennett, Stephen Elardo and Colin Jackson, and GL alum, Jabrane Labidi, all presetned posters during the afternoon session Chemical and Dynamical Constraints on the Formation and Evolution of the Terrestrial Planets.
Bennett presented his poster on "The Metal-Silicate Partitioning of Tungsten at Magma Ocean Conditions Using a Laser-Heated Diamond Anvil Cell," which you can see a small clip of below.
Elardo discussed "Contrasting Effects of Carbon and Sulfur on Fe-Isotope Fractionation between Metal and Silicate Melt during Planetary Core Formation" to poster goers; and Jackson displayed his research on "Redistribution of Argon by Lower Mantle Phases During Magma Ocean Crystallization." Labidi presented work completed at GL in collaboration with Anat Shahar and Corliss Kin I Sio, "Iron isotope composition of depleted MORB."

Postdoctoral associal, Jihua Hao, presented "Chromium Redox Equilibria in Fluids and Minerals under Hydrothermal and Subduction-zone Conditions" during the Geochemistry of Sediments and Sediment Recycling and Implications for Crust and Mantle Evolution over Earth History session.
Friday, December 18
Bob Hazen and Daniel Hummer presented posters during the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Continental Crust Evolution poster session.
